Name: Fraoch Heather Ale
Brewery: Heather Ale Ltd. / The Brewery Craigmill
Overall Rating: B+
Style: Heather Ale
Serving Style: 12oz
ABV: 5%
IBU: Unknown
Appearance: Appears like a Belgium, cloudy. Like amber.
Aroma: Again, a Belgium hint. Light aromas. Nothing over powering.
Flavor: Totally unique to other ales. I believe this ale tries to replicate the PREHOP era of brewing. So it’s very different than normal ales. Super dry finish.
Body: Medium
Enjoyability: I liked this more than I thought I would. It was a nice change of pace from all the IPAs, Stouts, and barley wines I’ve been drinking. I would recommend this to you if you want a change of pace and to experience beer pre-hops.
Another Take: Ba
From the Manufacture: Brewed in Scotland since 2000 B.C. heather ale is probably the oldest style of ale still produced in the world. From an ancient Gaelic recipe for “leann fraoich” (heather ale) it has been revived and reintroduced to the Scottish culture. Into the boiling bree of malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather are added, then after cooling slightly the hot ale is poured into a vat of fresh heather flowers where it infuses for an hour before being fermented. A light amber ale with floral peaty aroma, full malt charachter, a spicy herbal flavour and dry wine like finish.
