Well I went down to O’Brien’s on Friday the 13th. I had previously posted the details on this. It was raining heavily and it was almost like something or someone didn’t want me to go. As I got on the freeway it rained harder and harder. I thought about turning around as we were only doing 45mph. As I got closer to my goal the rain subsided some. I think I was able to get up to about 55mph max without hydroplaning the work truck. That would be a very bad career move.
I started off with the Horny Devil. This was a very nice example of an American Belgian style ale. This was my first time having it and I was pleased with the results. I highly recommend you plunk down your $10.99 and get yourself a bottle.
Then I moved onto a special release ale: My Bloody Valentine. Pretty aptly named brew as it is dark cherry red. The aroma of the My Bloody Valentine was pure hops! The hops continued on into the taste with a malty/grainy finish. The carbonation was excellent with the hops still lingering in the mouth. I recommend you try it for yourself, but I wasn’t super stoaked to go try it again.
Side track time. I had a taste of the Young’s Double Chocolate Stout on nitro. That was pure smooth dark bitter chocolate heaven. Ok, back to AleSmith!
Next I went for the Speedway Stout. This is a big bold stout that is in the 12% ABV range. As my compadre noted, it is pitch black. Like used motor oil. The taste is anything but with roasted coffees that come out strong! You can taste the ABV, even though they tried to hide it with a ton of coffee, bittersweet chocolate and sweet malts. Overall this is a good sipper, if your not driving. I left a magority of this one in the glass as I could tell it would make for an ‘interesting’ drive home in the rain. So sit back, and sip this one slowly for desert, at home or with someone else as the dedicated driver.

Good call on slowing down at the end there Gile, 4 high octane brews and a work truck in the rain could indeed be detrimental to the career! I need a drink just thinking about it!!
