Cleaning And Sanitizing

Fermentation ain't pretty...

I’ve finished up listening to two great podcasts from The Brewing Network and realized I’ve been really slacking at both cleaning and sanitizing in my home brewing sessions.  After 3 hours of listening, I learned everything I needed to know about the different types of chemcials, contact times, temperature, agitation etc.  I also learned that “clean” doesn’t just mean you can’t see deposits.  And I learned that Sodium Percarbonate (my primary means of sanitizing!) is not an effective sanitizer, it’s more of a cleaner.  The podcasts were a little biased since they had Jon Herskovits of Five Star Chemicals as a guest, but they covered non Five Star products as well.  I highly recommend any homebrewers that have ever wanted to increase their knowledge of cleaning and sanitizing to listen to both of these:

Brew Strong: Cleaning

Brew Strong: Sanitation

Basically I’ll be using PBW (Pro Brewery Wash) for cleaning and StarSan or Iodine for sanitizing from now on.

Awesome, thanks for the continued education in the wide world of home brewing!

I’ve been using PBW since I started brewing. For sanitizing I’ve been using an iodine like substance and it seems to work great. I have heard that StarSan is really great too.

Isn’t there an all in one cleaning and sanitizing wash?

There are some cleaners that claim to be “all in one”…both cleaning and sanitizing. One-Step comes to mind. But from what I’ve read and heard in those podcasts, it does a bad job at both.
