Name: Palo Santo Marron

Brewery: Dogfish Head

Overall Rating: A-

Style: Brown Ale

Serving Style: 12oz Bottle

ABV: 12 %

Price: $4.99

Appearance: The interesting brew pours out thick, dark and syrupy, leaving a creamy tan head rising to the top.

Aroma: The smell is mild and malty, while faintly hinting of the wood characteristics only to be confronted by the cloud of alcohol that reaches the nose.

Flavor: Starts off rich and sweet with dark roasty malts flavored with some hints of chocolate and perhaps vanilla, soon giving way to the warming abv taste and finish. There is a nice layer of smoky complexity to the flavors subtley added by the wood aging no doubt.

Body: The body is thick and coats your palate with a warming syrupy touch and a surprisingly smooth finish. Carbonation has no effect at this point, and is not missed.

Enjoyability: This has truly been a unique experience indulging in the Palo Santo. With the robust malted tones and the high %12 abv providing a smooth sultry finish, I really enjoyed this drink from the first sip to the last. It was almost as if the brewers at Dogfish Head were trying to appease my secret desires with this one, and it worked quite nicely. This is truly a beverage for a special occasion, or just when you need to treat yourself right.

  1. Sigaro Says:

A wonderful review of a beer I’ve been trying to get my grubby hands on for some time. I salute you for trying something new. I’m curious, what type (if any) ale is this thing??

  2. skotmigloor Says:

This is labeled as a Brown Ale, sorry I know thats not your favorite style Sigaro! None the less, being a fan of high abv libations would make me say this one is a must try for you.. You just may change your mind about browns after this one!

  3. Sigaro Says:

I don’t dislike any style, I just haven’t had a brown ale that blew my mind. The only brown I can recall vividly is Newcastle Brown Ale…which I don’t like.

I just had one of these for the first time on Sunday, and it was great. It doesn’t have that super-malty molasses flavor that a lot of high gravity beers do. Except for the affects of the alcohol, you might not know it is 12%.

I wrote up a review on paper that I’ll post my blog soon. When I do I’ll be sure to link to this review.
