Aroma: Big, piney hop aromas with a slightly citrus finish. Surely dry-hopped.
Appearance: Very nice amber, redish hue. Slight haze to the clarity on this one. Wonderful cloudy head.
Flavor: Slightly astringent, almost rusty taste up front. Finishes with a nice hop resin. The malt is very present and biscuity.
Mouthfeel: Well carbonated, full bodied with some residual sugars present. Tongue coating hop resins.
Enjoyability: First impression on the first sip was “Wow, this is really fully bodied for a DIPA”. This is not like a Stone Ruination or Greenflash DIPA which are much drier and have a lower final gravity. The best way to describe this beer would be English-American Double IPA. It has the body and maltiness of an English IPA but the agressive hops of an American IPA. I was so conflicted with this battle between countries that I went searching to see what malts this one used. Sure enough — Maris Otter English Pale Ale (which I just used this morning for my English Ordinary Bitter….). That explains a lot and made me appreciate this beer slightly more.
Overall, I think I still prefer drier DIPAs, but this one is still worth giving a try again.
