Aroma: Pronounced floral scents, strong pine and citrus aromas.
Hops: Resiny, big and chewy!
Appearance: Gorgeous copper/amber hues, good clarity and a persistent off white head. Laces the glasses nicely, good head build-up with agitation.
Flavor: Pronounced powerful slap of hops right on your tongue! POW! Interesting balance with the double malts. Malts stand out at the end.
Mouthfeel: Smooth and very well carbonated. A lingering hop coat paints your tongue.
Taster’s Notes: No doubt this is a big IPA. Within its class it has proven to be among the elite however I wasn’t all that impressed. It didn’t stand out from other Imperial IPAs I’ve tried in the past. I was hoping for a stand-out brew, but didnt get it which was a surprise to me!! Marin produces some of the best beer I’ve tried!
I have sampled just about the entire Marin line of brews now and find this one to be rather unsatisfying. What’s interesting to me is that this brew is a derivative of their IPA which is a HUGE success yet this one didnt rock my world like their IPA which I’ll be reviewing later this weekend.
When pairing food and beer together, the goal is to match intensity to intesnity. So with this bold brew, I would recommend something along the lines of a Spicy Tikka Marsala or Spicy Chicken Tandoori with Raita.
Overall Impressions: I strongly feel that any brew that has placed within its style class is worthy of review.
Reviews are simply someone’s opinion about the beer and not the definitive answer to “what’s the best beer”. This will change drastically from taster to taster.. as you can see, I placed this one rather low. Buy this one if you’re a beer enthusiast or skip it if you are just dabbling into beers.
