Brewers Description: Ichabod combines malted barley and real pumpkin with cinnamon and nutmeg in a delicious and inviting brew. A rewarding complement to many dishes, Ichabod pairs well with autumnal foods such as poultry and root vegetables. After dinner, try it with your favorite dessert!
Name: Ichabod
Brewery: New Holland
Overall Rating: B+
Style: Pumpkin Ale
Serving Style: 12oz Bottle
ABV: 4.8%
Price: $1.99
Aroma: Strong vegetable odor with a slight lit match sulfuric scent. Hints of sweat cinnamon and nutmeg.
Appearance: Nice deep orange hue. Slight haze, but fairly clear for this style. Nice head, good lacing on the glass.
Flavor: Floral pumpkin notes are strong. Finishes with a bit of clove spice. Aftertaste is once again pumpkin.
Mouthfeel: A dry and slightly thin body is made up for by the good carbonation that gives the beer a nice balance.
Enjoyability: The aromas put me off but I was pleasantly surprised after sampling this brew. This is one of the most balanced pumpkin ales I’ve tried and one of the few where I can actually taste pumpkin. It’s not dominate like munching on a glass of pumpkin pie, but it is present. I haven’t brewed an ale with pumpkin yet myself, but given all the versions I’ve tried, I imagine it’s tough to get the taste of pumpkin infused in the wort. For that reason, this beer earned an extra +. I also love the label and name of this beer.
