If you aren’t familiar with the current issue going on with Hansen’s Monster Energy Drink and their beef with Rock Art Brewery’s Vermonster Barley Wine, then I suggest you head on over to the Support Rock Art Brewery Save Vermonster site. This is another classic example of a large company going after a small company to “cease and desist” the use of a name that isn’t even in the same category as one of their own products. It’s not like Rock Art Brewery created a “Monster Energy Ale” or a “Monster Heffe”. No they created “Vermonster”. Legal battles such as this can wage on for many costly years eventually ruining businesses and the personal lives of people that make a difference in their communities!
In doing a Google search for “monster”, it gives no other than 135 million hits! Is Hansen’s going to go after all of these? To make their case against Rock Art Brewery, I think they should have to! This would dwindle Hansen’s cash supply down like wax candle on a hot summer day. What is at the top of the Google search by the way? Monster.com, a very popular job search engine. Not Monster Energy Drink.
Below is what I put in the contact form on Hansen’s site:
“I am writing you this message to let you know that I am appalled at the fact that you sent a cease and desist to Rock Art Brewery for creating a BEER called Vermonster! Monster energy drink isn’t even in the same category as a fine, craft beer like Vermonster. In my opinion Monster is to energy drinks what Budweiser is to beer, pure crap! I hope this boycott hurts your bottom line and I also hope that you understand that the craft beer industry sticks together. As I write this now, people are helping Rock Art get past this ordeal with you. So please, cease and desist on picking on companies that aren’t even in the same industry!“
Let the craft beer continue to flow and the Monster Energy Drinks to be pulled from the shelves!
I’ll continue to add more links as I see them around on Twitter and other fine blogs.
UPDATE: There is a petition to sign: link here
You can now help support the Vermonster cause by purchasing a t-shirt. For more information, call: (802) 888-9400
UPDATE: As quoted by Rock Art’s website:
“VICTORY !
America You have saved
THE VERMONSTER !!
Your voice has caused corporate america to rethink its position”
Looks like Hansen has changed their mind. Let the free market continue to create beer!!
